Home Decorating Ideas

A comfortable space that’s not cluttered or overly casual… sure, that’s everyone’s dream. But it’s not hard to accomplish, says Langos, if you approach each room by working from large to small. Start by making the furniture and walls solid neutrals, then accentuate the space with interesting details, colors and textures. Read on for the best room-specific tips we’ve ever heard.

Try an unexpected furniture arrangement. Instead of a sofa and side chair, choose four matching club chairs. To make different types of chairs look like a set, slipcover them in the same fabric.

Yes, your coffee table is a place to stash the remote, but it’s also a spot to show off your decorating genius. The trick is to keep it clutter-free. A beautiful box can house coasters and remotes; a stack of books is the perfect perch for flowers.

Do double duty. An upholstered bench can hold trays of snacks or drinks, or can be used as extra seating during a party. Decorative nailheads transform this boring bench into a striking piece.

Since the biggest design statement in the kitchen is the cabinets, have some fun with them. Mix glass and solid fronts, even materials. Here, the white painted cabinets delineate the cooking space, and the wood upper and lower cabinets serve as a built-in hutch and define the dining area. Treat countertops the same way—they don’t all have to match.

Use glass-front cabinets to display “art.” Similar items that vary in scale (like the pitchers, left) create an almost sculptural look.

Play up the room’s best features with architectural details. Beadboard placed high makes the ceiling look grander.

The bed is the most important piece of furniture in the bedroom. Choose crisp linens, then add elements of texture—a pretty patterned pillow, an oversized bolster, soft curtains.

If you have a nightstand that no longer works with the rest of your decor, drape coordinating fabric over it and top it with a piece of glass.

Never hang anything heavy above your bed. Instead, use a series of small matching prints or a group of mirrors like the round ones shown here.

Create distinctive lampshades by covering plain ones with pretty fabric.
