Picture of the Week 12/11 to 12/17/2012 by James Avery

Posted on December 12, 2012 by naturesbestblog

For an interesting play on holiday colors, click on the “Picture of the Week” button on our website to view this image sent in by James C. Avery of Somerset, Pennsylvania, currently a visual journalism student at the Brooks Institute of San Francisco, California, USA.  http://www.naturesbestphotography.com/index.php

2012NBPPOTW_JamesAvery

The story: “I caught this shot of a red-eyed tree frog during a ‘Critter Demo’ for my Natural History Photography class. We built a few little habitats and set up some lights, pocket wizards, and during one of our model’s spritzers, he decided to show us his marvelous nictitating membrane—or his third eyelid—that protects his eyes while allowing him to see.”

Click on the Picture of the Week button on the Nature’s Best Photography website to see this week’s featured photo sent in by David C. Smith titled “Elk Dawn”:
http://www.naturesbestphotography.com/

2012NBP_POTW_DavidSmith

The story: “I arose before dawn one morning and left my wife in the hotel while I went into the park in an effort to capture some images of elk at sunrise. I found a large meadow where I had seen several herds of elk the previous day. I hiked into the meadow well before sunrise and set up in a spot where the elk had obviously spent the night (the grass was flattened). I’m a big fan of silhouettes and at first light I caught this bull elk calling his herd. He was backlit by the early morning sun illuminating the steam coming off of the river.”

Nature’s Best Picture of the Week 11/27 to 12/3/2012

Posted on November 28, 2012 by naturesbestblog

For inspiration to enter the OCEAN VIEWS PHOTO AWARDS CONTEST, click on the “Picture of the Week” button on our website to view this image from Amos Nachoum of San Francisco, CA, USA: http://www.naturesbestphotography.com/index.php

The story: “I went to capture the annual migration and feeding action of the speedy striped marlins. Striped marlins chase and corral Pacific sardines to the waters’ surface. One by one the marlins race into the tight bait ball. Using their long bills, the marlins will quickly remove one fish from the ball, as if they are using chop sticks. Then it will swallow the fish – like here…learning the action, anticipating, and with passion.”

Time to be thankful! Click on the “Picture of the Week” button on our website to view this image sent in from Laura Dyer of Cape Town, South Africa:  http://www.naturesbestphotography.com/index.php

“We were parked at a weir in Kruger watching this Kingfisher in action. He dived into the water and came away with this fish, which took him a while to get down as it was quite large for his small beak! He seemed pretty chuffed with himself though.”

CLICK HERE  for a chance to be displayed at the Smithsonian exhibition.
Thank you to everyone who has entered the Awards competition. Flickr Photo Review – Image by Buck Shreck – Buffalo (Happy Holidays!)

Posted on December 24, 2011 by naturesbestblog

Below is an image submitted by one of our flickr members, Buck Shreck, of a Buffalo in the spirit of the holidays.

Submit your own pictures for a chance to be featured here on the blog!

  • Notes From the Field: “I had moved down to Montana for 1 year over 2010 and 2011. During that time I was going to Yellowstone almost every day and it made for some very interesting shot opportunities. On this particular day, I noticed a herd of Buffalo down in the bottom. As luck would have it, they started to come up the mountain side single file through the deep snow. I knew that as they crested the snow bank I was very likely to get some unique shot opportunities. I checked their direction and positioned myself to be in front of them as they came up over the snow bank. Most of them as they topped the snow bank, saw me and cut off to either side, nice shots but not quite what I was looking for. I wanted one cresting the top in my direction. My patience was rewarded when this big bull came straight over the snow bank, with the snow flying. The shot was exactly what I had planned.
The shot was taken on 01/22/2011
    Focal Length: 105 mm
    F. Stop: 4.5
Exposure time: 1/1250” – Buck Shreck
