Garrison Hullinger Interior Design does Chinoiserie:

Along with my studies and experience in interior design, I also have a background in art history and the fine arts. All that to say, the chinoiserie movement has become one of the most interesting design styles I’ve studied to date.

Along with my studies on the movement itself, I’ve also had the opportunity to work with it as well – and this has been the case with one of our most recent GHID interior design projects.

Chinoiserie-Inspired Design & Decor in an All-American, Portland Oregon Home by Garrison Hullinger Interior Design:

Interior Design incorporating Chinoiserie

The look was born out of our client’s love for their Chinese motifs, specifically four prints they feel quite attached to. Their home is incredibly traditional – updated to include modern amenities, medium to dark hardwoods and incredible molding and trim detailing. The clients are drawn to rather traditional to transitional furnishings and decor, yet have this draw towards Asian elements. A perfect melding of styles to incorporate chinoiserie accents in both their design and decor.

Check out our client’s prints below:

Chinoiserie-Inspired Area Rug:

We selected an area rug that speaks to the client’s love of traditional design and one that would work with Asian-inspired decor as well.

Chinoiserie Fabrics:

The fabrics we chose are very GHID. Geometric, sophisticated, casual and contemporary – all of which work incredibly well as accents to our chinoiserie styling.

Chinoiserie Accessories:

Ginger jars and blue and white pottery work perfectly as accents to our chinoiserie aesthetic. The color tones are perfect for the space, yet their overall shape and subject matter work incredibly well with the look we envision for the home.

Designing for a family

Family-Friendly Design Tips

Nobody likes walking into a room that feels stuffy or uninviting. Ideally you want every room in your home to not only radiate a sense of beauty and aesthetic appeal, but functionality and practicality as well. A room that looks pretty is great – but if it doesn’t function well with your lifestyle and family activities, then it’ll hinder your daily life rather than accentuate it. Remember, a room that looks beautiful but doesn’t take into account the demands of everyday family life will quickly be destroyed or end up like Grandma’s stuffy no-go zone. And that was never a place anyone wanted to be.

A Study In How To Design For Families

Our Portland, Oregon based interior design firm works with families all the time. In fact we estimate that at least 80% of our client’s are families with children still living at home. So what does this mean for our design process? It’s our job to think like a family, wrap our heads around their lifestyle and everyday activities and remember that functionality almost always trumps any design decision. This doesn’t mean we put beautiful design aside, what it means to us here at Garrison Hullinger Interior Design, is that great design begins with practicality and warps into beautiful spaces perfect for family life.
